Is Leopard Worth The Upgrade?
Leopard has arrived and most are not only excited, but ecstatic at the upgrade. Unfortunately, some are saying that Leopard is little more than an incremental upgrade and offering little new features to consider it a true upgrade. Ultimately, it depends on what you expect from an OS upgrade.
If you are comparing Windows Vista to Leopard, you might be slightly disappointed. Vista included a the enhaced UI (User Interface) that enabled the use of some very impressive visual effects and tools like widgets and transparent windows. Leopard did include some UI enhancements, but nothing close to the complete overhaul Vista showed.
Beyond new UI features, not a single person will even dare to consider Vista even in the same league with Leopard. The upgrades within Finder alone blows Vista out of the water. Then you add in the advancements in Apple Mail, iChat and iCal and you realize that Leopard truely is an upgrade worth considering.
Some of the most breathtaking features are:
- In Mail, you can not only add the person as a contact in your Address Book but, you can add an event talked about in the e-mail to your To-Do list and have it become an entry in your iCal
- iChat now includes the ability to record and save your conversations, whether they be text, audible, even video. This feature will likely be quite popular with podcasters previously required to use 3rd party apps like Skype to achieve the same thing.
So, now we get back to our questions…Is Leopard worth the upgrade? Of course. If any of the programs you use on a regular basis have been updated it would be quite advantageous for you to upgrade to Leopard.
There is one caveat, however. If you have programs on your system of a professional nature (ProTools, Adobe PhotoShop, etc.) you might want to hold off until tha maker these programs give their ascent that the programs will work or, in the very least, a patch to make them work flawlessly with Leopard.
I personally will be waiting until I am sure all of the programs I use will function in Leopard before I upgrade.
What about you? Are you going to upgrade? Have you already? What do you think of Leopard? What is your favorite feature?

I really wasn’t so impressed with Leopard. If anything, it killed a buddy of mine’s old powerbook laptop.
PictPicture - That doesn’t surprise me. Before the final release, developers had major issues getting Leopard working correctly on old PPC models. You buddy should contact Apple and see what needs to be done. Either that or reinstall Tiger.
Also, Apple is fazing out the G3 processor and is preventing Leopard from installing on a G3 machine. That may be the problem. Your buddy may just need a new machine to run Leopard.
Leopard is awsome…. I’ve been a Windows chick for the last 8 years that was until a collegue of mine let me have a play on her new Mac…… I have not looked back.
Like you mentioned - Finder alone blows Vista out of the water
