Microvision has been working on a crazy little laser-based projector. And when I say little, I mean itty-bitty. Teeny tiny. Seriously, the entire thing looks to be about the size of a stack of three quarters (it’s the funny little squarish bit to the right of the phone). And supposedly, in a darkened room, it will project an image up to 100 inches across.
If this thing comes to fruition, it’s going to bring in a whole new era of cell phones. Imagine a cell phone with the Microvision projector, a hundred GB of onboard memory or so (it’s only a matter of time), the battery Stanford is developing (10x the life of current batteries, more about that later), and an audio jack. You’d have a very, very, very portable home theater system. Way cooler than an iPhone. Unless Apple’s the one to integrate the projector. In which case it’d probably cost as much as a new Bentley.
It’s such a cool idea I can hardly stand it. That’s the kind of gadget I’d camp out in front of Fry’s Electronics for a week to get. In the winter. In Minnesota.
Anyway, Microvision has put together a cool little flash animation to demonstrate the tech, you should probably check it out right now.
Forget the iPhone or the Google Phone. Bring me the Home Theater Phone.

That would be an awesome phone. I’m sure it would tkae a few years to get the bugs worked out, and to get cheaper. I liked your comment about Apple, and how they tend to overprice things
That is some interesting technology. I am very interested in learning more about how laser projection works. I would love to see this technology soon. It would be so awesome to have that power to watch a movie almost anywhere you are. Thank you.
Cheers.
Nice concept but I think at the CTIA wireless conference, there’s something of this sort though not that small. The projector is actually palm-sized and your phone has to have the capability to output videos. It would be cool to have something smaller and work on almost any mobile phones.
I loved reading your blog post.
nice screen, in the future all cell will have something like this
Wow that would be sweet. Any chance this comes out before football season?
Very interesting
That is the future of what is possible with the technology we have right now. It’s absolutely amazing how far we have come as a society and how we use that technology to better our work and lives on a daily basis.
i wonder if it could project the bat signal. But seriously this could be put to good use
Neat idea…but it wouldn’t work for me. I lose things too easily!!
