As part of my burden as the writer on The Daily Fuzz, I feel a responsibility to my readers to get the newest technology and test it out for them. Alright, alright, I just wanted an excuse to get one. Besides, I need it for school. I am currently writing this post on my new Macbook (white 2.16 Ghz).
Hell is a G3 in an Intel World
As you may have noticed me mention before, I had one of the old G3 iBooks and I love that thing. It was my first foray into the world of Mac, but I needed something with more power and the ability to do more things. Just like in the PC world, Mac programs have required system specs that your system has to meet to run. The truth is that not many programs would run on a G3 anymore.
So now that I have this new computer, I tend to think it will improve my whole life; including my posts on The Daily Fuzz. I will have to spend less time waiting on my computer to catch up. For those of you who don’t know what it is like to use legacy hardware online, here is a small look into that experience. When you are typing into a text field on an old system, you could be typing and the text showing up is three or four words behind. Sometimes, if you are a really fast typer, you are a sentence or more ahead of the computer. Then you have to wait 20 seconds or more for it to catch up so you can make sure you haven’t made any mistakes.
Believe me, this gets pretty upsetting after a while. Especially when you are starting to type faster and faster. So I have this new Macbook and I am prety much smitten. It works like a dream and I am installing all of the programs I am needing for school. Programs like the Adobe Creative Suite 3, Final Cut Studio 5, Microsoft Office:Mac 2004. The stuff that any self-respecting tech addict would need on their Mac.
Macbook Heaven
The biggest thing that I have noticed that is different is the speed. Since I had Tiger on the iBook, everything is pretty muc the same. One thing that I found exciting was that I transfered all of my settings from my iBook to the Macbook without having to do anything more than connect a firewire cable between them. Since I will be doing reviews of all of the new programs, and I will be using them for school, I will list them for you.
Programs for Future Reviews
- Adobe CS3 - This one will be a very bit multi-part post series since there are like 10 programs included in this. Don’t worry, I will be thorough.
- Final Cut Studio 5 - I have used Final Cut before, but the programs that add functionality to it are going to be new to me.
- iLife Suite 08 - I had iLife 05 and due to hardware incompatibilities, some were disabled (G3s don’t play nice with iDVD)
- iWork 08 - This one is new to me and I will be a complete noob. I will do two series on this one, one as a noob and one as an experienced user. I know that for some programs, you have to use them for a while to really know their great features.
- Office:Mac 2004 - I have been using this one for about a year now so this should be the first review I do.
- Parallels - I am going to try this one out for the first time. I don’t really need Windows but I want to see how well this works. I have heard rave reviews, but I want to see for myself.
Sorry to all you Windows users out there who may or may not be interested in all things Mac, but you may be surprised that Macs are actually an option. Don’t worry, I’m not going to try to convert you, just broaden your horizon. And I won’t do these in succession, I’ll throw some general tech and Windows stuff in. Remember, with Parallels, I’ll be reviewing Vista!
So, what do you think? Good post ideas? Are there any programs you want reviewed and you want me to be the guinea pig? Let me know and I will be glad to try it out first.
