I learned to type with the Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing. It was fun for me. A contest against myself, or a race against the computer with bugs splatting on my windshield. But I have learned how to type with greater speed by playing Typer Shark! The motivation is much stronger. In Mavis Beacon you try to beat your old adjusted typing speed; in Typer Shark you try to spell the word on the shark before he eats you!
Sharks aren’t the only problem though. I have the most difficult time with the pirahna. They don’t have words written on them, but numbers and symbols. I didn’t get as far as numbers and symbols in Mavis Beacon! And the flesh eating fish come in hoards, and sometimes they are invisible until they are halfway to you already.
So, while I may have an anxiety attack while playing Typer Shark, and it has caused a great fear of red-sharks-with-white-lettering-on-them in me, it’s still a great way to learn to type. Or just to polish up your speed and accuracy. Or just a great game in which you can zap scary sharks.

I love this game! But then, I am a geek who loves to type.
I’m with you on the symbol piranha, they’re the devils. Also, I hate the green sharks whose letters change.
I must say, I envy your generation because you’ve grown up with games that give you great hand-eye coordination skills, and thus have an easy time typing fast. Glad it’s fun for you-and I don’t need to tell you how marketable that is. Keep it up!
i love games with sharks. but i am not sure i cand fnd this in germany - what do you think is this possible?
I also grew up with Mavis Beacon..your blog article brought back memories..for some reason the game was always locking up on our computer..Luckily a phone operator job I held for a year really helped my typing skills..
I have to say that Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing has been the last method I give a try to learn typing. Definitely it works. Today I’m 200% faster than 2 years ago. I recommend this method!
Mavis Beacon rocks for beginners just trying to learn how to type. Now that I think of it, it brings back memories of my old typing habits (can anyone say hunting and pecking?
Hah! This sounds like a great idea. I learned how to type as a kid with programs like Typing Tutor. There was no game involved. Just straight typing against a clock!
I’m sure it’s much easier to motivate people how to type nowadays. I mean, back then, you’d have to be a secretary or hardcore nerd to know what qwerty meant!

I remember the typing games my school had us use, they were much more fun than the normal type tests you have to take later on in life!
