About as painful as a papercut

Here’s the deal, I tried to update my WordPress installation to the newest version (2.3). I figured the latest and greates would always be best, right? WRONG!! I can’t believe that it broke my site and for a while I couldn’t even log into WordPress to change anything.

I thought WordPress was simple

I went to Wordpress.org and went to their support section to find out what I had done that was screwing with my whole site. I came to find out that very few plug-ins had been updated to work with the new version of WordPress and the plugins I had were doing it. So, what did I do? I deactivated all of my plugins and tried to see if it would work.

WTF!!!!

Now here is where it REALLY gets interesting. Even with all of the plug-ins deactivated, my site was still screwed up. Apparently my particular theme was doing the damage. At this point, I had three options.

  1. Change my theme (once I had finally gotten this theme working perfectly) and hope for the best
  2. Reinstall WordPress 2.2.3
  3. Give up blogging altogether

As you can see, I went with the second one. I figured if I went back to version 2.2.3 I would still have all the functionality I had before and I could wait until they have all the kinks worked out (or until my plug-ins are updated ;-)).

My Review

So you are reading this review wondering when the review part will come up. Here ya go…

  • If you like the next greatest thing and you like being a beta tester, then this version is for you. You will have a blast telling WordPress about the issues they have left unfinished.
  • If you enjoy bleeding edge (as in suicide-sliced wrists) technology, this is perfect for you.
  • If you are masochistic and feel like torturing yourself into ripping your eyes out…Try WordPress 2.3!!!

However:

  • If you like to use products that work great and give you very little trouble, stick with WordPress 2.2.3. I actually like some of the features they fine tuned (like widgets…they’re so easy to use).
  • If you already use plug-ins outside of this list, stick with WordPress 2.2.3.

So, there you have it! My suggestion is to keep the present version of WordPress you are running until they have worked all the kinks out and more plug-ins support version 2.3. Unless you want to seriously impair your ability to think clearly for 24 hours, but you be the judge.
